Rescue Background Story

The Greylag geese at the sanctuary were brought in to provide them with a safe and natural environment where they could live without the threats often faced by domestic birds. In many situations, geese are relocated to sanctuaries to ensure they are protected from predators, poor living conditions, or relocation from farms.

Since arriving at the sanctuary, the geese have adapted well to their surroundings. They freely roam the property, interact with other animals, and have become natural guardians of the sanctuary grounds.

Daily Care & Feeding Details

Morning Feeding

Time: Morning 7 AM

Feed Mix:

  • Specialized crumble feed formulated with additional niacin, higher protein, and lower calcium than traditional chicken feed.
  • The geese primarily graze on grass throughout the day.
  • They occasionally eat corn from nearby chicken feeding areas.
  • This feeding routine provides balanced nutrition while allowing natural foraging behavior.
Evening Feeding

Time: Additional grazing continues naturally throughout the day.

Feed Mix:

  • Remaining crumble feed and natural pasture grazing.
  • Supplemental feed may be provided if grazing availability decreases.
Fencing & Enclosure
  • The geese are free-roaming throughout the sanctuary grounds and are not confined to a traditional enclosure.
  • They act as natural guard animals, loudly alerting staff and other animals when unfamiliar people or animals approach the property.
  • Their roaming behavior helps them patrol the sanctuary and maintain natural flock dynamics.
Water Facilities

The geese have constant access to a large pond within the sanctuary.

  • They regularly swim, drink, and bathe in the pond.
  • Many of their eggs are laid near the pond area where they feel safest.

Fresh water is naturally replenished through the pond ecosystem and monitored by sanctuary staff.

Hygiene & Cleaning

Because the geese live in a natural outdoor environment:

  • The pond provides natural bathing and feather cleaning.
  • Sanctuary staff monitor nesting areas and remove waste buildup when necessary.
  • Feeding zones are periodically cleaned to maintain a healthy environment for the flock.

Medical Care & Progress Updates

  • Routine health observations are performed by sanctuary staff.
  • The geese maintain strong physical condition through natural grazing and daily feed.
  • Eggs are regularly monitored to ensure proper nesting conditions.
  • Veterinary evaluations are performed when needed to maintain flock health.
